A volunteer will phone each day, Monday through Friday. The call will be brief and will come during a previously agreed upon time period. If the client does not answer the phone after repeated tries, a designated person (usually a relative or close friend of the client) will be called to visit the client's home to make sure the client is safe. If unable to make contact, an emergency procedure is implemented to check on the senior and send help if necessary.
Short-term Phone-a-Friend is available when a family goes on vacation and leaves a loved one home alone or when a person is recuperating from an injury or hospital stay. Any Haywood County resident feeling alone, whether elderly, ill, shut-in, or physically challenged who would benefit from a daily call from someone who cares is eligible for the service. A simple registration form, available at Haywood Community Connections, is all that is required.
Phone-a Friend is also a great volunteer opportunity for those who have a busy schedule with limited time to give as well as presenting the chance to volunteer to those who are homebound or may even have a disability themselves. For some seniors, your call may be the only one they receive all day. Just a couple of minutes of your time can make all the difference in the life of someone experiencing loneliness.
If you know someone who would benefit from having Phone-a-Friend call to see how things are going or you would like to volunteer to connect daily with a senior just to chat a minute, please Click Here for an application.
