February 6, 1 pm "The Ethical Dimension of Aging Gracefully - balancing personal desires with family concerns: Dr. Lisa Verges will speak on difficult issues we face with our aging loved ones regarding living alone, driving, maintaining independence, but at what risk? Recently asked to a provide a hand out of her presentation, Dr. Verges declined stating that much of what she speaks about comes from her heart not from printed material.

Phone Assurance: Isn't just for shut ins. Consider those who sit day and night, weekends and holidays with no one telephoning to talk. Would receiving a phone call to someone who has experienced a home break-in make them feel more comfortable? What about a person experiencing depression? Phone Assurance doesn't have any boundaries as to who can receive a friendly daily phone call and who cannot.

Respite Caregiver/Senior Sitter's List: Mountain Projects, Inc./HaywoodCommunity Connections, Alzheimer's Assn., 30th Judicial Alliance, Midwest Haywood, Southwestern Commission Area Agency on Aging have all collaborated to bring this project to you. The individuals on the list are available to provide respite care and have cleared a criminal background check. Also, two training programs have been developed geared toward employers and those wishing to be hired. To inquire about potential 'sitters' or trainings call 452-2370 or stop by Haywood Community Connections at 81 Elmwood Way, Waynesville.

General Public Fares: Haywood Pulbic Transit provides transporation within Haywood County and to and from Buncombe County. The local general public fare is $2.00 per boarding fare, county wide. Transit fares to Buncombe County vary. Please call 452-1447 ext 120 Mon-Fri to make a reservation 24 hours in advance. For Monday service, please make reservations before 3 pm on Friday. Thank you.

Senior Friendly Business Program Collaboration between Haywood Community Connections and Western Carolina University’s School of Art and Design brings a Senior Friendly Program to the County. This program seeks to recognize businesses that have not only met the legal compliances of the Americans with Disabilities Act but have also demonstrated a clear and conscious effort to be senior friendly.  More Information.
